Time is fast running out for campaigning journalists wishing to enter a prestigious award jointly won by a regional press reporter in 2007.

September 1 is the deadline for entries to the Paul Foot Award, sponsored by the Guardian and Private Eye magazine, which celebrates the best in campaigning reporting.

At last year's event Deborah Wain, from the Doncaster Free Press, shared the top prize with Guardian journalists David Leigh and Rob Evans.Deborah wowed judges with her long-running investigation into corruption in the £37.5m Doncaster Education City project.

The award was launched in memory of Paul Foot who died at 66 in 2004.Paul was a revered investigative journalist whose high-profile campaigns included helping overturn the convictions of the Birmingham Six and Bridgewater Four and exposing corrupt architect John Poulson.

Entries can come from individuals, teams of journalists or entire publications and can be just a single piece or several stories from an entire campaign.

Articles must have been published in either a newspaper, magazine or online between September 1, 2007, and August 31. Broadcast material is not eligible for entry.The overall winner will receive £5,000 with five runners-up each receiving £1,000.

This year's judging panel is chaired by former Western Morning News and Today editor Brian McArthur and includes Private Eye editor Ian Hislop, Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger and general secretary of the National Union of Journalists Jeremy Dear.
