Stroudsburg High newspaper earns journalism Silver AwardThe Pennsylvania School Press Association has awarded the 2010-11 Mountaineer, Stroudsburg High School's newspaper, a Silver Award for the overall quality of the paper.

PSPA applauded the Mountaineer on its innovative feature stories, editing and compelling, relevant graphics. For the final issue of the 2010-2011 school year, the Mountaineer staff created an entire issue dedicated to the downtown Stroudsburg area.

The staff focused on that subject because 2011 marks the 175th anniversary of Monroe County, and Stroudsburg is the county seat. The PSPA commented on this issue: "Excellent issue on the 'Tour de Stroudsburg' — great thematic idea to hold the newspaper together." The Mountaineer staff works hard to make sure that every piece of information they get is exact and top-notch. According to PSPA, the staff does "thorough and accurate research that's evident in news."

The paper's Letters to the Editor page is popular. PSPA commented, "Your newspaper gets a lot of letters for a high school newspaper — and this is impressive." The Mountaineer staff says it prides itself on finding creative and unique topics to cover. "We had some really strong story writers, students who were willing to tackle unusual and offbeat topics, as well as thoroughly research them and interview the appropriate sources," said journalism adviser Matthew Sobrinski.
