Chronicle, La Voz win top Texas APME honors

The Houston Chronicle and its Spanish language newspaper La Voz won seven top honors and dozens of other awards at the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors' 2011 competition. Texas APME joins the Headliners Foundation of Texas in honoring the best journalism in the state among newspapers, college publications and Spanish-language publications. The Chronicle competes in the Class AAAA division for papers with a Sunday circulation of 125,000 or more.

Chronicle photographer Smiley N. Pool won Star Photojournalist of the Year, first place in the general news photo category, first place for online report and several other awards. David Langworthy took top honors for editorial writing and Jeffrey Martin won first in sports feature writing.

Sylvia Struthers of La Voz received first for news writing for a Spanish publication. Brett Clanton, Tom Fowler and Monica Hatcher won first place in deadline writing. Brian Rogers and Lindsay Wise won second in that category.

Richard Justice received second for his sports column. Terri Langford took second place in the Star Investigative Report of the Year category. Immigration reporter Susan Carroll won second for specialty reporting.

Susan Barber was third in Star Designer of the Year category and Lise Olsen came in third for Star Reporter of the Year. A team of Chronicle reporters - Clanton, Fowler, Hatcher, Wise, Jennifer Latson, Purva Patel and Terri Langford - won second in Star Breaking News Report of the Year.

The Chronicle earned three awards for blogging. Recipients were Eric Berger, Dwight Silverman and Fowler, Jillian Cohan, Clanton and Jennifer Dlouhy. The Chronicle also won second and third place for team effort.
